I am looking to use solar to open and close the door on my mobile chicken coop. Has anyone found a good DC motor to do this? My plan is solar panel to battery to timer to motor and maybe a thermostat driven exhaust fan.

Question. Looking to have the Water heater, lighting. amd Heating for my coop of 6 chicken. Have a 3'x4'x6' coop, was wondering what is the size system you would recommend. Thanks David Gorman

Timothy,
Encouraged by your idea, I've purchased a 5 watt trickle charger and am excited to add a light to my new chicken coop.

Would you mind if we traded emails so I could ask some further questions?

I can be reached at fei_da at hotmail dot com.

Hi Father Geek,

Thanks for your recent comment on our blog about our solar powered chicken door opener. Your project looks much more impressive...

To answer your question, we've had absolutely no problems at all with the door opener. I think I checked the battery levels after a couple of weeks, but they were fine. Apart from this, it's been running flawlessly and without being touched for well over a year now.

I'm thinking about installing some lights on a timer inside the coop before the winter - I miss my breakfast eggs when the troops go off-lay in the winter. This of course is a natural application for solar power, and I'll probably do something similar to your setup (albeit on a smaller scale).
